H.E President Dr. William Samoei Ruto on Thursday made a high profile visit to Migori County, where he held a key stakeholders’ meeting aimed at reviving the region’s ailing sugar industry and strengthening local partnerships for sustainable economic development.
Addressing an audience composed of local leaders, religious figures, farmers, youth representatives, investors, and members of the business community, President Ruto reiterated his administration’s commitment to uplifting the agricultural sector with a specific focus on sugarcane farming, which remains a lifeline for thousands in the region.
In a much welcomed announcement, the President assured cane farmers that they would receive their long-awaited bonuses, underscoring the government’s pledge to improve livelihoods in the agricultural sector.
“Our farmers are the backbone of our economy. We are taking deliberate steps to ensure they are supported, rewarded, and given the tools they need to thrive,” said President Ruto.
The President emphasized a multi-pronged approach to regional development, including investments in modern infrastructure, the construction of additional housing units, expansion of market access for farmers, and development of modern markets to enhance trade and commerce.
Stakeholders present during the meeting expressed optimism following the President’s assurances. Discussions centered on sustainable reforms in the sugar industry, addressing chronic mismanagement, delayed payments, and inefficiencies in production and supply chains.
President Ruto called for enhanced collaboration between national and county governments, investors, and farming cooperatives to solve long standing issues that have plagued the sector.
The visit marks a significant step in government efforts to decentralize economic empowerment and place rural counties like Migori at the heart of national development priorities.
