The Migori County Government, through its Department of Special Programs and External Partnerships, has begun preparations for this year’s International Peace Day, set to be marked on September 21.
Led by Chief Officer Starlet Oduory, the county convened a stakeholders’ meeting bringing together key players including civic organizations, county officials, and Fidel Castro Barasa the Nyanza Regional Coordinator for the National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC). Representatives from the Eastern Africa Collaboration for Economic, Social, and Cultural Rights were also in attendance.
The meeting comes at a time when Migori has been working to shake off its “red zone” designation by NCIC, which previously flagged the county especially the Migori-Narok border as a hotspot for conflict. However, officials noted that continued collaboration among local leaders and civil society groups has significantly improved the situation.
The event is expected to highlight peacebuilding successes, foster dialogue, and rally communities around sustainable coexistence.
