Migori County Governor, Dr. Ochilo Ayacko, reflected on the profound legacy of the late Dr. Phoebe Asiyo, stating that her influence was instrumental in the establishment of the Gender Commission during his tenure as Minister for Gender, Sports & Culture under the late President Mwai Kibaki.
Speaking at the funeral of Dr. Asiyo in Kanyaluo, Karachuonyo-Homabay, H.E Governor Ochilo Ayacko recounted how the late Dr. Asiyo and Ziporah Kitonyi approached him, urging the formation of the commission. “When I had the privilege of being the minister for gender, together with honorable Zipporah Kitonyi, they came to my office and directed me that I must constitute the gender commission,”The governor stated. He acknowledged that he had the honor of establishing the commission under their guidance.
H.E Governor Ochilo Ayacko, was among the national leaders who gathered to pay their last respects. The attendees included President William Ruto, H.E. Raila Odinga, fellow governors, and other prominent leader.
In honoring Dr. Asiyo,H.E Governor Ochilo Ayacko emphasized that her passing was a significant loss, but her legacy continues to shape Kenya’s progress in gender justice and empowerment.
