Migori County has taken a bold step toward agricultural transformation by launching the first phase of the Agripreneur and Business Acceleration Model, an initiative under the World Bank-funded National Agricultural Value Chain Development Project (NAVCDP).
The Training of Trainers (ToT) workshop, which began today at Treat House Hotel in Rongo, runs through Wednesday, January 15, 2025. The training was officially opened by Hon Lucas Mosenda County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries, and Blue Economy. He was accompanied by Mr. Isaac Madafu Keya County Chief Officer for Agriculture, Mr. Reuben Opiyo, County Digital Agriculture Lead Mr. Dima Kennedy, among other County Project Officers and trainers from the National Project Office and KALRO.
The TOT workshop, organized under the “Know Your Farmer (KYF)” initiative, aims to:
1. Equip trainers with skills to empower farmers and agripreneurs with innovative tools and knowledge.
2. Bring together county officials, agripreneurs, and technical experts from Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries, and Cooperative sectors.
Key focus areas include:
1. Farmer Data Collection: Using technology to manage farmer profiles for better service delivery.
2. Crop and Livestock Management: Enhancing farm productivity and sustainability.
3. Advanced Farm Technologies: Promoting efficient and modern farming practices.
4. Financial Services: Improving access to credit and financial literacy.
5. Technology Integration: Training on the KYF mobile application for efficient farming operations
The ToTs will cascade their knowledge to 280 agripreneurs who were selected last year. These agripreneurs will undergo intensive training sessions at their respective sub-counties on Thursday to Saturday January 16–18, 2025.
Starting Monday, January 20, 2025, the trained agripreneurs will begin offering extension services in all 40 wards in Migori County. Their responsibilities include:
1. Farmer Registration: Ensuring that farmers previously left out can now access fertilizer subsidy vouchers.
2. Market Linkages: Providing market information to connect farmers with buyers, enabling better decision-making.
3. Farmer Mobilization: Encouraging farmers to join SACCOs, cooperatives, and common interest groups (CIGs) to enhance bargaining power, reduce exploitation, and improve access to financial services and other resources.
Speaking at the opening, Hon. Mosenda expressed optimism about the program’s impact:
“This initiative is a step forward in equipping our trainers and farmers with the tools and knowledge needed to increase productivity, adopt innovative solutions, and achieve economic growth. With the addition of 7 new young men and women to support this initiative, we are building a strong team to transform Migori County’s agricultural landscape.”
The Agripreneur and Business Acceleration Model is set to revolutionize agriculture in Migori County. By enhancing farmers’ access to essential services, inputs, and markets, the county is fostering a more resilient, sustainable, and profitable agricultural sector.
This process marks the beginning of a new era, where farmers are empowered, markets are better connected, and agricultural innovation takes center stage in Migori County’s development agenda.
