Migori County took center stage in the national public health calendar as it played host to the official launch of World Breastfeeding Week, celebrated globally from August 1st to 7th. The event, held at Rongo University, brought together key stakeholders in the health sector, dignitaries, and members of the public to champion breastfeeding as a cornerstone of child health and maternal well-being.

Speaking during the event, Governor Dr. Ochilo Ayacko expressed pride in Migori being chosen as the focal point for this year’s national celebrations. He reiterated his administration’s unwavering commitment to strengthening health systems across the county to ensure a healthier and more productive population.

“Today, we proudly welcomed the world to Migori County. Hosting the national launch of World Breastfeeding Week is a strong affirmation of our efforts in public health,” said Governor Ayacko. “Our county continues to invest in sustainable healthcare systems that support mothers and children, which are crucial for long-term development.”

The event was graced by Mary Muthoni, the Principal Secretary for Public Health and Professional Standards, who commended Migori for its active role in promoting maternal and child health. She underscored the importance of breastfeeding as a life-saving intervention and called for continuous community engagement to support mothers across the country.

This year’s theme for World Breastfeeding Week centers on building sustainable support systems for breastfeeding—emphasizing the collective responsibility of government, healthcare providers, communities, and families in ensuring every child gets a healthy start in life.

Migori’s selection as host reflects the county’s growing reputation as a leader in health and social development. The event also included exhibitions from health sector partners, nutrition talks, and testimonies from breastfeeding mothers who have benefitted from county-supported maternal programs.

World Breastfeeding Week is marked annually to raise awareness and inspire action on issues related to breastfeeding, which remains a vital practice for reducing infant mortality and boosting lifelong health.
