MIGORI COUNTY HOSTED A JOINT MISSION TEAM FORMULATING A CONCEPT FOR A FAO/IFAD USD 200M PROJECT ON SUSTAINABLE LIVELIHOOD PROJECT

The Governor of Migori County HE Dr Ochilo Ayacko on Monday the 5th February 2024, hosted a joint mission Workshop for Various Departments of the County Government of Migori,The Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO led by Ronald Ajengo), International Fund for Agriculture Development (IFAD led by Tito Arunga) and various Agencies of the National Government (National Irrigation Agency, National Treasury, Department of Agriculture et al led by Eng. Laban Kiplagat) to deliberate on an eight(8) year programme to run in selected ten(10) counties from 2024.

The programme, to be implemented through the State Department of Agriculture, will be consolidated into an Integrated Natural Resources Management Programme with three components:

  1. Community led enhanced environmental and Narural Resource Management, ecosystem systems, and climate action.
  1. Improved, Inclusive, and Sustainable Rural Livelihoods.
  1. Institutional Strengthening, Policy Support, and Programme Coordination.

These components will be implemented in the eight year programme in the following practical thematic areas:

  1. Increasing water productivity and use within the county.
  1. Enhanced Environmental Conservation.
  1. Improved land productivity through support and development of value chains.
  1. Improved roads and other infrastructure.
  1. Expansion of Lower Kuja Irrigation Scheme.

     

    In his opening remarks, the governor gave his assurances to the mission team on the availability of land, necessary budgetary allocations, and a team of dedicated staff to support in conceptualising and implementing the programme.

    The Joint Mission Team then moved together with Migori County Management to field fact finding in prospective areas of the programme in Rongo, Awendo, Suna West, Nyatike, and Kuria West Subcounties.
